Make every harvest count – do your part

Queensland agriculture is made up of many different types of farms and therefore, jobs.  Finding the right job for yourself is critical to a successful and fun adventure! It is also crucial to the longevity of your employment and staying in your new job for more than a few days. You don’t want to set yourself up in your accommodation and then find the job isn’t what you expected.

Choosing the right job for yourself is also vital for our food and resources.   Agriculture operates within a very complex and time-critical environment, where plants and animals are reliant on how well we do our job.

Do your part, get prepared and choose your ideal job wisely.

Ag commodities & industries

Queensland agriculture is made up of many different types of farming.  These are referred to as ‘commodities’.

Each commodity usually has an industry level group that represents them. Often called the ‘peak industry body’.  The peak industry body for each commodity works closely with government and private enterprises to promote, advocate, and help that industry’s farmers and businesses.

There are also ‘supporting industries’.   Agriculture heavily relies on these supporting industries in order to produce efficiently and remain viable.  Example supporting industries are irrigation, machinery, chemicals, technology along with many other inputs.

If you are keen to start a career in agriculture, it might pay to check out the relevant peak industry bodies and supporting industries.

Visit the Regions to discover which commodities and industries you will find around Queensland.

What are my career options?

Agriculture is very diverse, with many casual harvesting, packing and farm hand jobs.

However, if you want to build a career – there is a multitude of options.  Agriculture is an essential industry for all Australians and those countries that we export to.  Agriculture produces our food, fibre and natural raw materials – things that we all need every day.

Agriculture is a critical industry and historically, a ‘very manual’ sector.  However, in recent years, the industry has researched and developed science, digitalisation and mechanisation in every sector.

These new technologies are world-class and provide exciting career opportunities.
